I really enjoy doing art challenges and contests. It's not necessarily the idea of winning that is so appealing, although that would be pretty cool. It's more that I like the possibilities and options I come up with in my head and then choosing something to try to bring to fruition.
Several months ago, a local art store had a dragon contest in which each participant had to make a dragon using a wooden dragon to start with. I immediately thought that I just HAD to make one, so I got to work on mine.
I made hundreds of individual scales from paper that I gessoed, textured and painted. I glued these on my dragon once I had positioned him the way I wanted him. It took what seemed like forever to put all those scales on! I used gesso and paint and paper for his legs and face. He still needed some more adornment, so I decided to add some fiber and beads.
I had a blast making my dragon, whom I named Tang, although it was a time-consuming process. He didn't win the contest, but he did make a debut at the art store for several weeks as part of the dragon display.
Tang now lives on a shelf in my living room, watching me make other art.
The Dragon is so cool (: I really wish I was talented when it comes to art, but sadly I'm not. Its still a whole lot of fun though!
Love this blog! Can't wait to see more of your creations.

Tang is very cool. Did you get his name from Mulan?

No, I've never seen Mulan. I named him after Tang, the orange powdered drink mix, you know, the one that went up on the space shuttle? He's sort of orange, so I thought the name fit.
